Tips for Employment After RetirementDiscussing employment after retirement... As exciting as retirement is for most people, many individuals are choosing to work long after "retirement" starts. In reality, the word "choose" isn't completely accurate. Most folks will be working out of necessity, not because they enjoy going to work until the very end of their life. Although the reasons may vary, surveys show that well over half of all people still working plan to continue to do so after retirement. Some of the reasons may include:
In Reality...Unfortunately, the second reason plays a larger part in why most of them "choose" to continue working into retirement. The cost of living is at an almost all-time high and most individuals or families find it very difficult to continue in their present lifestyle on solely the benefits they're receiving from Social Security. So, they work to add some sort of supplemental income to their retirement benefits. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a pension or retirement fund. Those that do have retirement funds often choose to reinvest them into financial options that will give them an increase over time. Some of these options may include equities, stocks, bonds, corporate or Treasury bonds. They work for a few more years while their retirement funds are making more money for them to use later in the future. Keep Busy?Another reason for continuing employment after retirement is to keep busy. It's a fact that keeping busy promotes better health and longer life. After getting up early and going to work every day for over 40 years, suddenly having nothing to do often leads to restlessness and depression. Not everyone that chooses to work after retirement works full-time. Some people choose a part-time job, which still allows them time for family or for other fun activities and hobbies. Some people truly enjoy their line of work and the prospect of suddenly having to give it up because they're nearing retirement age is depressing so they opt for employment after retirement. This is not always the case with everyone as some really anticipate retirement as a time to enjoy life and finally do all the things there was never time for before. Personally, I can think of many better things to do than work another "job" in retirement. This is why I suggest all over this website to invest time and money during your working years in areas such as real estate, network marketing, website building, etc. Then, when you "retire", these business centers shoot off various streams of income so you can live in style and "choose" how you spend your days. Factors to Consider if You do Decide to "Work"If you are one of these individuals that are contemplating employment after retirement, there are some factors that need to be considered. If you continue to work and earn a paycheck, this may affect any retirement or pension plans or benefits you may be entitled to from Social Security. Be sure to check with the administrator of your pension plan fund to see if there are any stipulations as to how much money you can earn before it will affect your pension benefits. If you're receiving a disability benefit, this may also be affected by any earnings you make. Be sure you're fully aware of how much you can earn by continuing employment after retirement. The Social Security Administration also has some stipulations as to employment after retirement. A lot of this will depend on if you have reached "full retirement age". Some individuals choose to begin drawing on their Social Security benefit at the age of 62 rather than wait for full retirement age, which for most is 66. If you are one of these individuals, your benefit will be affected if you work and earn more than their annual limit, which is currently $13,560. If you wait until full retirement age, you can work without your Social Security benefit being affected. To be sure of the exact amounts and where you stand, check with the SSA before you begin job searching. Life After Retirement page |
