How to Use a Guide for Planning Retirement

A guide for planning retirement keeps you on track as you move toward your golden years.

When you start thinking about approaching the end of your working life it’s helpful to start developing a guide for planning retirement.

Your guide will help you to figure out where you're at with your finances and how to get to where you need to be.

One of the first things you need to do is to prepare a balance sheet that shows what your finances are like right now.

You need to list out all of your assets and all of your debts.

For assets, don't stop at just listing your savings and investments.

List everything of value you own.

Take a close look at the debts you have listed. Your next step is to work on eliminating those debts. The easiest way to get rid of your debts is to concentrate on paying them off one at a time.

As you pay off one debt you’ll have more money available to put toward the next debt in line. Pay off your debts one at a time this way until they’re all gone.

Another thing you may want to consider is looking at your life insurance needs. One of the purposes of life insurance is to make sure that money is available to take care of your dependents when you have passed.

Many people find that those they would leave the money to are no longer in need. The money they’re spending on life insurance may be better spent in other areas of your retirement fund.

Getting Your House in Order

Another step in your guide for planning retirement is to take a look at your housing. Are you planning on staying where you're at when you retire or are you planning on relocating to a different house?

Some people that decide to remain in their current house will need to do some remodeling to make sure the house is set up for them when they get older.

That bathtub/shower might be traded in for a floor shower. You might want to put in sturdier handrails by the stairs. Your kitchen may need to have more storage that is lower than what you have now. Do these changes while you’re still working and can pay for them.

If you’re relocating you’ll need to figure in any cost of living changes. Different areas have different costs to live there. It may cost more to live where you desire so you need to take that into account.

Retirement Budget

The final step in your guide for planning retirement is to put together a budget for your retirement. By budgeting out what you’ll need to live on you’ll be able to determine how much you’ll need in your retirement fund.

Make sure to remember to calculate for inflation when you’re working out your future budget. Today's dollar probably will not buy as much in the years to come, so you’ll need to calculate that into the equation.

The number you come up with in your guide for planning retirement should be looked at as a minimum amount. The more you can add to your retirement fund beyond that, the more secure your retirement will be.
