Your Out of Debt JourneyOnce you're out of debt, it's time to pay special attention to staying out of debt. It takes work to keep yourself free of the terrible burden. The tendency is to once again use the open lines of credit that your dedication to freeing yourself of debt gave you. Of course, it takes a great deal of effort and dedication to pay off accumulated debt in the first place. However, once you eliminate debt, it takes a huge effort to then keep on the track of staying out. The mental state you must accept is one where you no longer accept in any way the idea of living with debt. Very specific decisions come before you are either in debt or out of it. or, when you're on the road to eliminating it. Too many people have accepted that debt is simply a fact of life. This doesn't have to be the case as soon as you stop thinking in this manner. Whether you've paid all your debts off or whether you're still going through this process, you must adhere to the debt free living mental state. Although many purchases today require that you use a credit card, there's no law that says you must use them for everything else. Additionally, when you do use them, the responsible way to use them is to make sure the balances are paid at the end of each month. The credit card companies love the fact that many people have adopted lifestyles where they spend more than they earn and make up the difference through the use of credit. You may need to alter your lifestlye in order to accomplish debt free living, but it's a choice you need to consider if you really want to retire early. Every time you can't afford to make a purchase unless you use a credit card and "float" the balance over many months, you are doing a great disservice to yourself and your ability to truly retire. If you can't make the necessary changes (better choices, a side business, real estate investing, stock investing, etc.) that will lead you down the road to living on cash only, there's not much anyone can do for you. If you're already out of debt, you have a chance to do something great with the cash you used to send in to your creditors every month. Use it to fund you new business ideas, save it for investments... just don't waste it by going out and buying more "stuff". Think of credit cards as your vicious enemy and operate with cash. Always remember the pain of being in debt and the work it takes to get out of debt close to your heart. Personal Finance Education home page |
