Understanding Social Security BenefitsThere will be some social security benefits at retirement for you if you invested a majority of your life working at a normal W2 job. Although tough to think about, these benefits can also be triggered to help the family through the death of a spouse. The main thing to consider, though, is that you don't want to base your retirement success on social security only. You need to figure out other ways to manifest your own money through retirement accounts, mini businesses, real estate, etc. This will ensure you that your social security payments will be a supplement during retirement, not your full retirement. If you allow that to happen, you will be very sorry in your old age. In order to receive your full benefits through social security, you need to wait until you're 65 to access them (some people may need to wait until 67). You are allowed to get to your benefits prior to age 65 or 67, but this will reduce the funds you receive. Once you fill out an application, it can take quite a few months to get approved for your social security benefits. After you application is all filled out, they will let you know what benefits you qualify for. If you have a disability, you may also access social security benefits, although you will have to verify your condition by showing medical records or statements. Your social security office can show you how to apply, as well as educate you on the type of benefits you're eligible for. They will vary depending on whether you can't work at all based on your condition, or whether you can only work a minimum of hours. When it comes to social security payments, be sure to involve your accountant. Some of the money you receive may be taxable. You want to make sure you report everything properly, not only to make sure you keep the tax man off your back but to also ensure that you don't pay taxes on income that you don't need to. Since there are different variations of social security benefits you can be eligible for, it's always a good idea to check out all you options. However, be very aware that what's available to you through social security will never pay for an enjoyable retirement alone. Benefits home page |
