Dilemma: What to do After RetirementWhat to do after retirement... Although retirement is something that many people anticipate for many years, when the time actually arrives most folks find themselves wondering what it is they should now do. If you're wondering about this, you're not alone. But, like the many others, you have options available to you. Whether it's hobbies, vacations, working or volunteer work, the choices are endless. Retirement need not be a time in your life when you're idle and lost just because you no longer have a job you're forced to go to each day. It's amazing how so many people have worked all their lives dreaming about the day they'd retire. Some even count down their time, making statements like "Two more years and I'm done working." In spite of this, the actual thought of retiring can be very scary at times. Too many people find themselves feeling useless, with no purpose in life. This is because they haven't planned ahead about what to do after retirement. They've thought about the actual idea of not having to work every day and, maybe, worked on their retirement and pension plans so they'd be financially stable, but haven't actually thought what not having a job to go to every day would really feel like. Going to work every day makes us feel alive, healthy and productive. Often when we reach retirement age, the productive feeling decreases because we're no longer earning a paycheck and contributing something of value to another company or person. In some people, this leads to a feeling of helplessness and often depression. Don't let this happen to you. You've reached those special "golden years" that you've heard about all your life. Make the most of it. There are many things you can do to not only keep busy but also to feel productive and happy. If you choose the right things, you'll find yourself enjoying them more than you ever thought possible. What to do after retirement? Let's look at a few ideas... FamilyHow many family events did you have to miss because you had to work and just couldn’t get the time off? If you're like most of us, there were more than you care to think about. You no longer have that problem. You have all the time in the world to spend with family, doing all those special things you never had time for before, like shopping, fishing with the kids or grandkids, going to ballgames...to name just a few. If your children live far away and you've only been able to see them once or twice a year, this can now change. HobbiesIf you've always had a hobby but never had enough time to fully devote to it that can change now. You'll have lots of time to spend on your hobby now. If you don't have a hobby, this is the perfect time for you to find one. Determine what it is that you enjoy doing most and start doing it. Volunteer WorkThere are many organizations and companies that are in desperate need for volunteers. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce and they can direct you to the right place. Doing volunteer work for others can give you a feeling of self-satisfaction you've never known. TravelYes, traveling is now possible for you. It doesn't have to be someplace expensive, unless your finances permit. There are many places that may be close to your home and very affordable, such as short cruises or train rides. Check with your local travel agency and see what they have to offer. What to do after retirement? There's plenty to do if you sit down and figure out what makes you feel fulfilled.
